Olive tree pruning in Mallorca

An olive tree forgives almost any mistake — just not many years of them. When to prune in Mallorca, how much crown can go, and why clean tools matter more here than cutting technique.

The moment

Late January to March — before bud burst

Pruning happens at the end of winter, after the coldest nights and before the tree comes into growth: in Mallorca usually from late January into March. The wounds then close before summer, and the tree puts its strength into the remaining shoots.

Two windows are off limits: high summer, because freshly exposed bark scorches in the August heat — and autumn before the harvest, when fruit and energy hang on the tree.

The measure

Light and air, not a radical cure

The island farmers’ old rule of thumb still holds: the crown should be open enough for a bird to fly through. Water shoots go first — the vertical rods from trunk and branch bases — then inward-growing and crossing branches, then dead wood.

A tree should not lose more than about a quarter to a third of its crown in one year. Olives fruit on last year’s wood: cut radically and you get two quiet years and a tree full of water shoots. A measured cut every year beats the radical one every five.

On young trees pruning is formation (a framework of three or four leaders), on mature trees maintenance — and on neglected trees a rejuvenation spread over two or three winters rather than done in one.

Xylella

Why the tools must be clean

The bacterium Xylella fastidiosa, which can infect olive and almond trees, has been confirmed in the Balearics. There is no cure — only prevention. For pruning that means: disinfect tools between trees and above all between properties, make clean cuts, and have conspicuously withering branches looked at professionally rather than simply cutting them off.

That is why the cheapest prune can be the most expensive one: whoever moves from plot to plot with uncleaned tools carries away more than cuttings.

Afterwards

The cuttings have to go

In Mallorca cuttings do not stay on the ground: dry wood is fire load, especially on slopes and at the forest edge. It gets chipped or carted away, and the firebreak around the house belongs in the same job.

At MARNER CARE, grove, tree work and firebreaks are done two or three times a year and charged by time spent, with a quote and your approval beforehand. You will find the regular garden care on the prices page.

What owners ask about this

Will the tree fruit less after pruning?

After a strong prune, yes — for a year or two, because olives fruit on last year’s wood. That is why the measured annual cut beats the radical one every few years: it keeps yield and shape in balance.

Can I prune in summer?

Better not. Freshly exposed bark scorches in the summer heat, and the tree loses water through every wound. What bothers you in summer gets tied back or noted — cutting happens at the end of winter.

Does MARNER CARE handle tree work?

Yes. Grove, tree work and firebreaks are done two or three times a year, charged by time spent, with a quote and your approval in advance.
